Fitting Curtain Poles into Plasterboard, Block and Concrete
Most North Dublin houses and apartments are plasterboard on the inside. A curtain pole is a dead weight hanging off two or three brackets, all day. Cheap plastic plugs in a hollow wall are why poles come down six months later and take a strip of plaster with them.
On plasterboard, we check the wall first. If there’s a stud where the bracket should go, we fix into the timber. If there isn’t — common on apartment partitions — we use proper cavity fixings rated for the weight of the pole and the curtains, not a rawl plug from a starter pack. Lined curtains, blackout curtains, and kids pulling the fabric all add load. The fixing has to match that, not the photo on the box.
Blockwork and concrete (older Skerries and Malahide houses, some new-build externals) take a different plug and a hammer drill. We bring both. In the same visit we can take down the old pole, fill the holes if they’re close enough to reuse, and set the new one level with the window — not “near enough” by eye.
